Description (last modified by jtv)

Would it be feasible to have multiplayer minesweeper games?

Something along these lines:

  • Players take turns revealing patches of water.
  • All players can see the current known state of the minefield.
  • When a player makes a mistake, that player is out of the game. The patch that killed him is revealed.
  • Last remaining player wins.
  • Apply some kind of resolution strategy when multiple players survive the game.

AFAICS there are some fairness issues here:

  1. A player "dies" at the moment he makes a mistake, not at the end of the round. This eliminates ties, but doesn't seem quite fair. On the other hand, the initial moves can be made easy by showing a border around the field. In the normal case, by the time players start dying, the game is already in a "steady state" where it no longer matters who made the first move.
  2. How do we break ties when more than one player survives? It would seem unfair to declare whoever makes the final move the winner. On the other hand, the player to make this last move may also be taking an inordinate risk. Other resolution strategies include:
    • Proceeding to a new minefield with all remaining players, perhaps even with a higher mine count.
    • Starting a new minefield with all players, and awarding points according to the players' rankings and/or survival in each round.
